BOOK COLLECTING 101 - PART TWO - FAMILIARISING YOURSELF WITH BOOK DEALING TERMINOLOGY
Before you even start searching for the books you've chosen to collect I advise you to familiarise yourself with the jargon of the book dealing community. Most dealers in collectible books use standard terminology when describing the format and condition of the books they list and it can often seem like a foreign language to the virgin collector. Having said that, getting second hand book lingo savvy is made easy by the Independent Online Booksellers Association (IOBA) who have developed a thorough Glossary of Book Terminology that we have made available on our website. Take the time to have a look through. I guarantee it will be worth the time and effort.
Tip: Aside from the glossary provided by IOBA, you will also find that most online global second hand bookselling sites have a book terminology guide of their own, although sometimes you have to look hard for it. For instance, the ABE Books website features a General Glossary, as well as specific sections on Book Sizes, Book Condition and Common Abbreviations!!
